Two of the most exciting moments of the California State Thespian Festival are the opening and closing performances. This is a great way to represent your school and show off your talent on the main stage. Five candidates from each troupe across the state will be invited to apply for the high energy, dancing AND singing opening/closing numbers, which will be choreographed by our musical theatre choreographer and musical director. The opening number performed on Thursday, April 9th, and the closing number performed on Saturday, April 11th.

Important things to know:
  • Only five candidates may apply in total.
  • Each candidate will apply for either dancer, vocalist, or acting.
  • Each candidate will only be chosen for one number: Opening or Closing. Dancers, however, may note that they are flexible to be chosen for either.
    • Opening Number will only cast dancers. There are no vocalist or acting parts in the opening number.
  • Applications are due January 31st by 11:59 pm online only. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • If you are selected in for Opening or Closing number you cannot participate in Play Marathon, Playworks, Assistant Director/Choreographer opportunities, or Tech Staff. You will need to make a choice.

  • Candidates who communicate by answering e-mails and phone calls when needed.
  • Candidates are available for up to a three-day rehearsal process during the festival.

We want to have every troupe represented

Important rehearsal information

The festival board will do everything they can to prevent scheduling conflicts, but if you have a conflict you must contact us ASAP. Rehearsals are mandatory and might resort to the loss of your position and chance at applying next year if you miss a rehearsal and don’t communicate with your choreographer and director(s).

Opening Number: Mandatory rehearsal will be Thursday morning April 9th, approximately 4-6 hours long, time: TBA. A mandatory dress rehearsal will take place before dinner to incorporate costumes.

Closing Number: This number is more extensive so multiple rehearsals will be needed. The first rehearsal will take place right after Thursday night’s show and more on Friday and Saturday before the performance at the close of the festival.

It will be important to stay in communication with your directors as the rehearsal schedule becomes more available.
