Two of the most exciting moments of the California State Thespian Festival are the Opening Number and Festival Finale. This is a great way to represent your school and show off your talent on the main stage.
At Festival Students will be able to select from a broad variety of theatre workshops: acting, dancing, design, directing, technical theatre, playwriting, and improvisation – the list is constantly growing.
CA Playworks is a staged reading process, allowing student playwrights, actors, assistant directors, and stage managers, to work together under the supervision of a professional director to produce a staged reading by the end of the festival. No fee for actors or ADs. $40 per Thespy playwriting submission.
Improv groups perform for adjudication. Each team made of 4-5 students from at least two different troupes. No fee.
Scholarships available for undergrads and seniors in 9 distinct categories. No fee.
Festival attendance not required.
Backstage challenge is a friendly, competitive event where students compete against each other in different technical elements to see who is the cleanest and the fastest in each event. No fee.
30-minute one acts or cuttings. One per troupe.

Fun, non-competitive events, great for troupes with some students in late night rehearsals. No fee
Student tech crew runs all tech for Festival under the mentorship of professional technicians. No fee.
Student Designers work with professional mentors to develop a design related to Festival theme.
